For over 260 years, Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York’s purpose is “to provide relief of natives of Scotland and their descendants who may be in want or distress, to provide educational assistance to natives of Scotland and their descendants, to conduct and sponsor such other and further activities, as may be deemed appropriate or desirable by the Society and as from time to time permitted by Federal and State Law for a Not-for-Profit Corporation, to foster or encourage good will, understanding and communication between the people of the United States and the people of Scotland and to promote such social intercourse among the members of the Society as may be necessary and appropriate to, and consistent with, such purposes, including fund raising to sustain them.” (Excerpt from Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York Constitution, City of New York on the 13th day of November, 1794.)

In 1956, the Society expanded its mission of aid to the needy to include a merit-based scholarship program, reflecting Scotland’s time-honored focus on the importance of education, dating back to the Enlightenment. Since its inception, the program has awarded over 190 graduate-level academic scholarships to American and Scottish students studying in the US and in the UK. The Society is honored to provide the young men and women of tomorrow an opportunity to gain further knowledge in their respective areas of study including; law, finance, journalism, education and the arts.

Saint Andrew’s members are a vital element to the success and growth of the organization and much of its charitable work is provided directly by the membership. Members’ affection for their Scottish heritage is an integral part of the culture of the organization. The Society’s vibrant network of influential people and partnerships with key organizations in Scotland make it the leading social and philanthropic group in the Tristate area.

Our guiding tenets are reflected in our motto: Charity, Scholarship, Fellowship.

In order to meet our mission we are led by those guiding principles:

  • To continue our role of improving the lives of Scots and their descendants at home and abroad.
  • Raising the standards of those around us, our Saint Andrew’s community and the wider society through our stewardship and example.
  • Fostering connections and ties internationally in an ever globalized and interconnected world.
  • A commitment and belief in education.
  • Adhering to our principles while leaving room for growth and change for the future. For as we uphold the fine traditions and actions of the Society’s past, we continue to transform and adapt our positions as we look to the future.
